Make Your Own
iPhone Game
In 24 Hours
Even if it's the first game you've ever made
I've wanted to work on an iPhone game for a while and am really excited about the possibilities this kit provides.
Rich, FL, USQuite a bit better than any other introductory level documentation we've seen anywhere... our wholehearted recommendation...
AlexCurylo.comI just purchased Tuesday evening... the source code is fantastic. I have finished the book and LOVED it.

Diving headfirst into making smartphone games sounds great. But, it’s… well… unknown. How cold is the water?
With an ocean so wide, where in the blazes does one start? It helps to have a knowledgeable guide to take you where you want to go: whether that’s learning the basics of game development or publishing your own complete game or app idea.
What can the iPhone Game Kit help you learn? Sprites, animation, level building, touch controls, sound effects, artificial intelligence, Cocos2D, Objective C, the iPhone SDK, Xcode, getting on the App Store, and a plethora of other modern-day game development topics.
Download the PDF sample and take a peek at the book’s table of contents.
Cocos2D for iPhone and Android
Cocos2D is the leading, open-source, royalty-free smartphone game engine. It’s easy to use, community-supported, reliable, mature, and over 1500 mobile iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad games have been published using it! And now, thanks to Cocos2D-X, it’s possible to release games for Android with the same codebase.

Why is Cocos2D so easy to use? Because you can play a sound effect, animate a flipping sprite, flash some rad custom font, all with just a couple lines of simple, pure Objective C code. No knowledge of OpenGL is required! Rotating, mirroring, parallaxing, scaling, tinting, sliding, jumping, and a Halloween-sackful of other transitionary effects are quickly at your fingertips.
Cocos2D can even be used to make apps with custom graphics! If you want to know more about Cocos2D, check out our detailed blog post about why Cocos2D is one of the best iPhone game engines.
iPhone SDK and Xcode
The iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) has ballooned to nearly 4 GB of frameworks, API, developer tools, sample projects, and documentation. It really, really, really helps to know where to begin! We’ll learn how to navigate the iPhone SDK and get your game to fly with the Xcode Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Objective C Programming Basics
You’ve probably got some experience with computer languages. Everybody knows some HTML, right? But Objective C… what’s it like? Is it worth learning? Personally, I like it better than C++, even after years and years of programming games in C & C++. The way message parameters are explicitly named keeps all my code readable, and Xcode’s auto-completion is handier than a hammer in a field of half-driven nails.

Level Making with a Map Editor
We’ll learn how to make levels with the Tiled map editor. It can be used to make levels for sidescrollers, RPGs, isometric games, puzzle games, and just about anything you can dream up.

Publishing Your Game on the iStore
When it comes time to publish your game, the iPhone Game Kit includes an extra PDF entirely about the publishing process. Should you hire a PR firm or just build up a fervent fan base?

The iPhone Game Kit Layer
Not only will the iPhone Game Kit teach, guide, and hasten your way to making your own video game, but it contains helpful, re-usable code snippets that you can include in your own projects!
The AI class gives you a model for creating artificial intelligence to control enemies and other characters. The CharacterProfile class makes your life really easy when it comes to loading allllll those sprite frames and sound effects for your character. The Sound object eliminates your worries over background thread loading and the other complexities of the CocosDenshion sound engine.

What People Say
“I have purchased several ‘packages’ like this and this one is clearly THE best one I have used. Honestly, it’s worth more than what you are charging for. The tilemap template is great, what a time-saver! The real benefit is that I’m finally starting to ‘get it‘ with respect to Cocos2D.” — Greg
“I think you can learn a lot by seeing how other people do things. It really looks like you put a lot of effort collecting things in to a single download, and the books are very well done. You have done an excellent job putting the stuff together. The game is nicely done as well, it plays quite smoothly.” — Jeff
“I am LOVING your style, humor, and method. I have 20 pounds of books, the most recent being Big Nerd’s, which is the best of the lot, but nothing kick-starts your a— like your method. (You can quote me on that ;-)” — Tim
About the Author
Nat Weiss began sketching games in the gravel on the playground. “The excitement of making my own game!” He then ate books on game development for breakfast until, at the tender age of fifteen, Adventures With Chickens was released. It was programmed in C, typed in via the command-line edit application, and compiled for DOS. Back in 1995, 640 by 480 pixels at 256 colors was the norm and it was fun to play a trick called color palette swapping.
