Here’s the place to talk about what kind of game you want to make. Use this to gain feedback from other game creators and inspiration for your idea! ;) Enjoy.

High five Nat!

I just bought the kit and I am glad that I did.

These are my suggestion for the kit improvement, which are generic and can make
all users happy since they are applicable for most of the games.

1. In-App purchase – universal feature for many type of apps which can sell add-on content.
User can buy new levels, new weapons, new puzzles and so on.

2. Localization and internationalization.
The world is big – an app should cover other markets! Almost 100 markets:
iPhone Country List: http://aaplinvestors.net/stats/iphone/iphoneintl/

3. Different games require different hero movements.
To make kit applicable to different types of games the kit could show many alternatives, which would cover different user needs.

Some important examples for hero movement:
– “stahlmanDesign’ movement
- Movement for hero base on tilting the device (Rolando style)
- Hero follows path drawn by user’s finger (Flight control style)
- Hero jumps from one point to the other (good for board games – moving pieces)
- Hero is dragged from one point to the other by user’s finger

4. Interaction with social sites: OpenFeint, Facebook…

From my point of view these are the most important and generic improvements, which could benefit many users.

All the best to you and all users!

High five Gamer!

Thanks for your suggestions. I heartily agree with you on all of them. Item number 3 will be partially addressed in the next blog post and then incorporated into the next Kit update. Your other suggestions have been added to my ‘to do’ list and prioritized.

Enjoy creating. ;)

I’m new to gamming but want to make a gold minning game. kind of a time managment game that is theamed around minning for gold. player moves his avitar to the mine, goes into an underground level and mines through the cave to get gold and bring back up. sell the gold to make the camp better and move on to next level.

Not sure this game kit will get me all the way there but its a start.

I don’t consider myself an artest so between the programming and the art it could take a long while.

Sounds like a fun game. Keep your end result in mind and start with the smallest tasks you can. You will get there!

I am going for a something simple. Discover the sdk, get the hang on cocos2d, get some expeience… Probably a simple card game.

Tetris, Whack-a-Mole, Memory, Space Invaders, Pacman to start. Maybe a side scroller like Mario later when I build up the experience.

maybe a virtual villagers type of game, or a tycoon type of game.

Nat, I just got the kit, and I want my main character to be able to shoot enemies with a gun or weapon…any suggestions for implementing that?

I’ve always wanted to make an Isometric Tile based game, so when I saw the kit, I had to buy it! Best money I’ve spent in a long time. I just got my first game onto the App Store and am now going to sit down with the kit and read and code and read some more and with any luck, I’ll finally write an ISO game. Thanks Nat, the kit, book and community look great!

@gholmes: Just like a gun or other projectile weapon, magical throwing axes will be released as part of the 3.2 Kit on January 2nd! That example code should help you, unless you have already figured it out for yourself. :)

@Cliffy: Thanks! What is your game called on the App Store? Will you post a link so we can check it out?

Hi Nat,

Here’s a link to the main website:

http://www.imbaentertainment.com/

If you click on Shadows Call on the top left you’ll get to more details.

There is an update currently awaiting approval that adds save/continue to the game, based on code you posted on the Cocos2d forum. (that’s how I found this site, from your post on the Cocos2d forum: http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forum/topic/737/page/2).

To be fair to all the others involved, I only coded Shadows Call, I had nothing to do with the artistic side, or the creative side. I’ll be starting work on the next chapter of the game next week.

Unsure if it’s possible with this kit however I have always wanted to create a RPG similar to Final Fantasy IV, V, VI & Breath of Fire II. Excited to start reading your documentation and just bought your kit!

Nice work Nat,

Now downloading the game kit.
Read the book. It looks, complicated.
I am a designer/artist – I was using flash with As3 to make my game but it was impossible to get a decent frame rate with full screen scrolling of tilemap.

Anyway,
I will make some very simple games at first – probably Pong, space invaders etc. to get a feel for the sdk and objective C.
Then I will attempt to do something more interesting….

Sound of one hand clapping Nat!

I just wanted to say hello and I hope that this purchase is well worth it. I am currently a student pursuing a degree in software engineering and I have always wanted to create video games that people will purchase and find some addiction/enjoyment in playing. Currently I am working on a simple scrolling spaceship game…nothing to fancy! As it stands at the moment, it does nothing more than player ship movement and enemy movement; however, my daughter likes to play it and she is looking forward to the completed copy for her iPod! This project of course was undertaken prior to the purchase, so even though I may implement some techniques from the guide, I would not count this one toward the 24 hour completion. I told plan to make more than this single game though.

Anyway, nice to meet you and all others as well.

@Cliffy: hey, way to go on Shadow’s Call. I’m downloading it right now… How are sales going?

To everybody else, welcome to the Kit and I hope it brings you closer to making your dream games come true. :)

Hi All,

I bought the kit couple of weeks ago and still reading the companion book. I plan to develop a platform game, scrolling the background as the character move forward. Any pointers which part of the code I should focus to?

Great kit, btw.

Hi everyone

I want to make a simple touch based game…. no moving around a level…

Been ages since I developed anything (ex-dev here). So I’m scratch my head a bit… Plus there’s a lot of concepts I’ve got to get my head around.

Hello All,
I just got the kit and it is already teaching me a lot. I want to make a old school RPG like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc. I think this kit will give me a good start toward that goal. Is this possible?
